Post-Renaissance Classical Fine Art - part I

Dawn by Michelangelo

...executed for the Medici Chapel in the area of the tomb of Lorenzo de' Medici in Florence, Italy. It is part of a second pair (the second being Dusk),...
"...Michelangelo di Lodovic [early 1500's] ... was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer of the High Renaissance who exerted an /? 'unparalleled'/ influence on the development of Western art ..." (shouldn't forget Leonardo,...)

The Creation of Adam

x

The Creation of Adam (Wikipedia) "...a fresco painting by Michelangelo, which forms part of the Sistine Chapel's ceiling, painted c. 1508–1512. It illustrates the Biblical creation narrative from the Book of Genesis in which God breathes life into Adam, the first man."

"On the ceiling, Adam is placed to the left, reclining on his right arm with his left arm outstretched reaching to the heavens. He is naked and muscular, lying
on the ground..."  (I don't personally care for Michelangelo as a painter; his figures are often too much like "superman"; and Adam here looks dorky.)

"One of the most important Renaissance painters that came about under Lorenzo deMedici was Sandro Botticelli. It was Botticelli who created the first overtly pagan images at a time when the church of the middle ages was still large and in charge, an act that would never have happened had Lorenzo not relaxed the attitude of the city toward ancient “non-church” ideas. This sort of attitude resulted in enormously free creativity in art, as well as in writing and in the sciences. All of it was happening in Florence. ...

The Birth of Venus

The greatest painting in Florence today is in the Uffizi gallery, once the offices of the Medici palace (the word uffizi means Offices). It’s this painting here by Botticelli from 1486, called 'The Birth of Venus'.

The painting is a true masterpiece of Renaissance art. In it, the mythical goddess Venus
is blown into the shore on a shell and received into the world on land. The story from mythology is far more detailed (and downright gross ... "

Rembrandt, The Night Watch

 x

"... Rembrandt’s Night Watch is an example of a very specific type of painting that was exclusive to the Northern Netherlands, with the majority being commissioned in the city of Amsterdam. It is a group portrait of a company of civic guardsmen. The primary purpose of these guardsmen was to serve as defenders of their cities"

Bacchus - by Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci was the "absolute master" of the real figure; by comparison, much of Michelangelo's paintings seem to me to be sort of "Superman" style... Bacchus here, and Christ, below, look more real.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn
(Wikipedia) "... is generally considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art and the most important in Dutch art history.[3] Unlike most Dutch Masters of the 17th century, Rembrandt's works depict a wide range of style and subject matter, from portraits, self-portraits, to landscapes, allegorical scenes, biblical and mythological themes... Jacob Wrestling with the Angel

x

"Jacob spent the night alone in communion with God on a riverside. There, a mysterious being—usually considered to be an angel—wrestled with Jacob... " (This looks a bit contrived... the angle looks like "its all in a days job...", and Jacob doesn.t look like a serious wrestler...)

(From post-renaissance until just before pre-impressionist periods, classical art paintings were strongly figurative,
including nudes. Classical art was almost (except for protraits) depictions of various religious / mythological
themes. Such themes have always been vapid for me, "Full of sound and fury; signifying nothing.")

Peter Paul Rubens - The Judgment of Paris (1630s)

"Rubens' work is well defined by his classical figures of historical, biblical and mythological subjects and stories. He completed many commissioned portraits for the affluent residents...
... a sumptuous realism in his works to express the human condition, faced with daunting tasks and obstacles.
Inspired by the great masters of Italy, he used their various subject matter and created his own oeuvre and developed a style that would make him a great master in his own right."

...somewhat unusual; Paris doesn't look god-like, but more like a Dutch/Flemish "country-boy".

"GAEA ...the personification of the earth. She appears in the character of a divine being as early as the Homeric poems, for we read in the Iliad (iii. 104) that black sheep were sacrificed to her..."
